Tannock: EU's concerted action on Iran addresses a major threat

Posted,1/23/2012 5:00:00 PM

EU sanctions announced today against Iran were welcomed by Charles Tannock MEP, foreign affairs spokesman for Conservatives in the European Parliament. He said: "Iran's nuclear military ambitions and its government's refusal to engage with the rest of the world on this issue constitute a major threat to global stability and a potential risk to peace in the Middle East, with an existential threat to the State of Israel in particular. It is also likely to lead to a regional arms race with countries such as  Saudi Arabia also wishing to acquire such weapons if Iran is allowed to possess one in breach of its NPT international legal obligations. "The measures agreed by the EU, in denying Iran some of its oil revenues and by making it harder for the leadership to move money around the world, will put pressure on Tehran to come back to the negotiating table. "It shows that when there is a clear and urgent need for action, the EU does not always dither and dodge the issue. This is Europe speaking as one voice for once on the most serious global security threat and I would encourage Iran to start to listen."

Charles Tannock joins Human Rights Commission

Posted,12/7/2011 12:00:00 PM

Charles Tannock MEP, Tory spokesman in the European Parliament on Foreign Affairs, has been appointed a member of the influential Conservative Human Rights Commission. Dr Tannock was invited to become a commissioner by the new commission chairman Robert Buckland, MP for South Swindon, because of his longstanding interest and expertise in the field. The Commission was established in 2005 to highlight international human rights concerns and to inform, advise and develop the Party’s foreign policy by making human rights a priority. It holds that freedom and human dignity should be at the heart of foreign policy and aims to ensure the importance of keeping fundamental human rights high on the political agenda.

EU Action Service is heading for an existential crisis

Posted,5/11/2011 12:00:00 AM

Strasbourg, 11th May 2011 -- The European External Action Service (EEAS) has rightly been low-profile in its first six months, leaving EU governments to drive the foreign policy agenda, but such a pre-Lisbon treaty 'business-as-usual' approach does not justify the high increases in spending brought about by the service, Charles Tannock MEP, European Conservatives and Reformists group foreign affairs spokesman, said today.

Statement on Sir Simon Milton

Posted,4/12/2011 12:00:00 AM

London, 12th April 2011 -- Conservative MEP for London Charles Tannock has today paid tribute to Sir Simon Milton, chief of staff to London Mayor Boris Johnson, Deputy Mayor for planning and previously leader of Westminster City Council.  Dr Tannock said:  "I worked with Sir Simon many times when he was chairman of Westminster Council and latterly in the Mayor's office. He was an incredibly impressive man with many talents and a genuine understanding into the issues affecting Londoners.  "This is a serious loss for all of London but our thoughts especially go out to Sir Simon's partner Robert and his family and friends on this very sad day."

Shivering, many wnder why EU can't heat itself

Faced with the prospect of his constituents freezing this winter, President Georgi Parvanov of Bulgaria said the best course of action was to restart a nuclear reactor - albeit one that dated from the Soviet era and had to be switched off when the country joined the European Union two years ago.

End Taiwan`s isolation

As protests over China's crackdown in Tibet and the debate about Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence continue to fester, the injustice of Taiwan's ongoing international isolation has barely stirred a flicker of interest, despite Taiwan's recent presidential election and referendum on United Nations membership. This neglect is not only shortsighted, but may also prove dangerous.

Europe has a stake in drawing Kazakhstan westward

Those who oppose Western rapprochement with Kazakhstan cite the country's lack of political and human rights. But, while Kazakhstan has not gone down the "color revolution" route to democracy that other post-Soviet republics like Ukraine and Georgia have followed, its timidity about reform does not justify isolation.
