MEPs demand referendum on constitution

Strasbourg April 25th -- British Conservatives - Timothy Kirkhope, Geoffrey Van Orden, Struan Stevenson, Syed Kamall - and their Czech allies have tabled a Written Declaration in the European Parliament demanding that any new European Constitution or similar text be put to the vote, by referendum, in every EU member state.

Mr Van Orden commented:

"There is very justified concern about the resuscitation of the European Constitution in some form. Such a new EU Treaty is likely to contain key elements of the previously rejected draft, aimed at consolidating the over-arching power of the EU, creating a permanent EU President and Foreign Minister, extending the acquis communautaire and the reach of the European Court of Justice.

"Today therefore, Conservatives from Britain and the Czech Republic are tabling a formal Written Declaration in the European Parliament demanding the right of referendum on a Constitution.

"The Declaration is now open for signature by all MEPs, who can make it clear where they stand on this issue."
