IMPETUS IS ON NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS RATHER THAN EU TO DO MORE ON ROOTING OUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Strasbourg 26 November 2009. Conservative Spokesman in Europe for Women, Marina Yannakoudakis today urged the European Parliament to vote against measures that would see the EU having more control over how domestic violence was tackled.
According to Home Office figures domestic violence accounts for between 16% and 25% of all recorded violent crime and on average two women a week are killed by a male partner or former partner.
One in six men will encounter domestic abuse in their lifetime and that is why Marina has opened up the debate in the Parliament and has asked that due regard be given to domestic violence against women, men and children.
"It is right that the EU raises the issue and brings the matter of violence against women onto the agenda however I would like to see national governments leading the way here and working with the police and specialist organisations to reduce such violent incidents occurring."
