CONSERVATIVE MEP's VOLUNTEERING REPORT GETS EU THUMBS UP
Strasbourg 26 November 2009. Conservative MEP Emma McClarkin today won significant support for a report she is shadowing through the European Parliament which will see the EU officially recognising the importance of volunteering by enabling and supporting a European Year of Volunteering.
As an active campaigner on the benefits to society as a whole from volunteering, Miss McClarkin was delighted with the result, speaking from Strasbourg today she said,
"Volunteers are often unsung heroes. They make an immeasurable impact in their communities and on people's lives.
"In tough economic times like these volunteering becomes all the more important and that is why I and others brought this report forward.
We passed the first hurdle today thanks to the significant support of the members of the European Parliament, and I am sure that this will make speedy progress through the Commission and Council before coming back here again."
