Speaking at the Launch of the EU-Congo Chamber of Commerce, held in the European Parliament, Conservative MEP and Development Spokesman Nirj Deva, who co-chaired the meeting said:
"Today we stand together, on the occasion of the launch of the EU-Congo Chamber of Commerce in acknowledgement of the great strides made by the Republic of Congo towards achieving every necessary facility and trapping of a secure, modern and democratic country.
"We must recognise that they are undergoing a period of development, as yet still evolving. It is however a nation that promises to have endured a critical transformation over the next few years under the guidance of President Sassou Nguesso, driving the country towards an overall expansion of its labour market and subsequently increased economic growth.
"According to IMF forecasts, The Republic of Congo will enjoy strong economic growth in 2011, and the nation is currently in the process of completing all necessary requirements to secure itself as a world competitor in producing goods and services."
Mr. Gilbert Ondongo, The Minister of Finance for The Republic of Congo said:
"The Republic of Congo is a nation at peace and one determined to eradicate corruption from every aspect and level of government and business.
"I see the need to not only create a state free from the abuses of power but one that must diversify its economy, developing new industries and opportunities for foreign investors and domestic businesses alike. We are prepared to work to lower debilitating and crippling trade barriers in order that we might facilitate the free access of our markets and become sustainable in our own right."
MrDeva said:
"Trade is the greatest aid that can be given to a developing country. Development is not a matter of short term aid packages but rather of enabling countries with the ability to not only sustain themselves but to eventually create their own wealth. This however can only occur when you support a country with trust and with investments.
"This is a country that has a wealth of economic potential and is eager to take full advantage of its thriving labour market, its increased oil productivity and the emergence of a strong mining and agricultural sector. Notably it is also looking to develop its tourism industry, already prominent due to sound infrastructure and the unspoilt landscape.
"We can take real pride in the concrete and resolute strides that we have made here today, working to encourage and develop stronger bonds between the EU and the Republic of Congo. I believe that it is in the clear and mutual interest of both the EU and The Republic of Congo to deepen their economic relations in order to develop higher levels of bilateralism."
