Hundreds sign the referendum wall at Conservative Party Conference

Hundreds sign the referendum wall at Conservative Party Conference

Posted, October 01, 2007 @ 00:00

A massive 400 people have signed a wall demanding a referendum on the revised European Constitution in the first 24 hours of the Conservative Party Conference.

Business representatives and members of voluntary groups together with MEPs and MPs, including Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, have put their name to the referendum call led by the Conservatives in the European Parliament. The huge response, with signatures set to cover every white space on the wall by the end of the Party Conference in Blackpool, is a clear message to Gordon Brown to keep his promise and give the British people their say.

Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, Timothy Kirkhope said:

"We have had an enormous reaction to our referendum wall. It looks as if there won't be much room left for people to sign by the end of the conference.

"Gordon Brown might well ignore this as he ignores a lot of other requests, but he is ill advised to do so. This is the will of the people and he should respond to it.

"We will keep up the pressure on Labour to come clean with the British people and offer the referendum they promised."
