Labour-led committee says Reform Treaty is "substantially equivalent" to original Constitution
Brussels, 9th October 2007 -- As the Labour-dominated European Scrutiny Committee concludes the so-called Reform Treaty is equivalent in substance to the old, rejected European Constitution, Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament, Timothy Kirkhope MEP, calls again on Gordon Brown to give the British people their referendum.
Doubts are being raised over the 'red lines' Mr Brown stressed secure vital opt-outs from key areas of the revived Constitution and the Labour chair of the Scrutiny Committee, Michael Connarty, has been reported as saying the Government's handling of this issue was "very concerning".
Mr Kirkhope said:
"It has been concerning indeed. The document on the table today is the old, rejected European Constitution. We know and the British people know. European leaders have said so and now we have the same message from a Labour-dominated committee. When is Gordon Brown going to come clean and give the British people the referendum he promised them?"
