Sponsoring a joint declaration of the European Parliament, Nirj Deva MEP, Conservative International Development Spokesman, has called on the European Commission to guarantee election observers attend the Pakistan elections in January 2008 only if martial law is lifted.
Mr Deva says:
"The deployment of an EU observer delegation to observe the parliamentary elections in Pakistan depends on the fulfilment of basic preconditions for holding free and fair elections by the Pakistani authorities. Elections held under martial law would be a clear signal of an undemocratic process."
