The Liberation of Zimbabwe should now be proclaimed

Brussels, 31st March 2008 -- The Conservatives in the European Parliament have called for the British Government to proclaim the liberation of Zimbabwe after visible polling results make it clear that the opposition MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai has won the Zimbabwean elections.

Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, Conservative Defence Spokesman and anti-Mugabe campaigner commented:

"In the absence of a full range of election observers and international journalists, now is the opportunity for the representatives of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to redeem themselves, after years of turning a blind eye to the tragedy of the Zimbabwean people.

"The SADC election observers, including those from South Africa, should now call on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission officially to declare that the MDC has won, and that the years of Mugabe's misery and oppression are over.

"The international community should then respond with an urgent and massive programme of assistance, to put Zimbabwe back on its feet, and relieve the starving millions.

"The British Government must take the lead in this."
