Brussels, 7th October 2008 -- A key aspect of David Cameron's '3G' agenda has been realised today after MEPs adopted the Conservative position on the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) in the European Parliament's environment committee, John Bowis MEP, Conservative environment spokesman said.
The ETS will now provide further incentives for industry to reduce its carbon emissions, and invest in green jobs and technologies.
After the vote, Mr Bowis said:
"MEPs have supported the Conservative position on emissions trading, and positive steps have been taken to implement a key pillar of David Cameron's 3G agenda.
"We have been able to take the views of industry into consideration, which was essential given the current global financial turmoil. Ultimately however, tackling climate change and cutting pollution were the absolute priorities and now under the ETS the EU has the chance to put in place an effective mechanism for climate protection. The ETS creates incentives for European businesses to invest in greener technologies, and it will assist in the creation of more green jobs across the EU.
"If our view is upheld by the parliament, we will have in place an effective tool that incentivises us to tackle climate change and cut pollution."
