Brown fails to show leadership on Climate Change package

Brussels, 12th December 2008 -- Gordon Brown has failed to show leadership in Europe, after the European Council significantly watered down the EU's Climate Change package.

Speaking from Poznan, Conservative environment spokesman in the European Parliament, John Bowis MEP, said:

"While even a watered-down package is preferable to nothing at all, our leaders have not lived up to their rhetoric and we are missing a crucial opportunity to set an example to other nations.

"Gordon Brown's ability to lead in Europe must be called into question. This week, he claimed to have saved the world, yet he has failed to convince his few counterparts who oppose this package that going green is in the long-term interests of the planet and will bring benefits to the economy.

"Next week in the European Parliament we will be voting for a strong commitment to tackle climate change when the package is voted on."
