Protecting the environment for a greener future

Protecting the environment for a greener future

Conservative MEPs are committed to tackling climate change and enhancing the quality of the environment in the UK, Europe and the wider world. We are working towards a truly low carbon economy and are committed to increasing energy efficiency and improving our energy security.

Climate change requires action at all levels of society, from governments, international corporations, local councils and individuals. We have consistently campaigned for legislation that will lead to a sustainable environment and that also encourages businesses to invest in and develop greener technologies and practices.

Conservative MEPs unwaveringly supported the Climate Change Package adopted in December 2008. John Bowis MEP, Conservative spokesman on the environment committee, played a key role in ensuring an agreement was found that was ambitious yet achievable, and that would create long-term incentives for business to invest in green technology. Read more

Conservative MEPs will also support work towards an international agreement on reducing carbon emissions though a successor agreement to Kyoto; we will strive for an environmentally and economically sustainable deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.We believe that our commitment to a green economy must not falter during the current economic crisis.

Now is precisely the time to reduce our consumption of unsustainable resources and invest in cutting edge green technologies that will lead to the creation of jobs and ensure that we are equipped to face the economic challenges to come.

Martin Callanan MEP was the spokesman for the entire centre right group in the parliament on new legislation that will require vehicle manufacturers to cut CO2 emissions from new cars. With support from his fellow Conservative MEPs, Callanan was instrumental in striking a deal that not only represented the need for more environmentally friendly cars but also took account of manufacturers who will need time to develop and adapt to the new laws. Conservatives feel it is important that manufacturers receive incentives to go green so that they can invest in new technology that will provide long term benefits for both the environment and the economy.
