Conservative MEP forces Ferrari to protect pedestrians - and car companies
In response to today's report in the European Parliament which proposes new regulation to protect pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, Conservative MEP Timothy Kirkhope, has called for the timetable to be lengthened to help industry adapt to the legislation.
Conservatives are always cautious about adding new burdens to our wealth creators. This report wants new safety criteria to become standard for all cars and vans. It aims to use technology to protect pedestrians when they are subjected to front-on and side-on impacts by cars. Kirkhope has two main issues with the report. Firstly, the rapporteur wants a quick timetable which he does not believe will be good for business. Secondly, some steep-bonnet vehicles could be classified as regular vehicles and fall within the rules.
Timothy Kirkhope, Conservative Spokesman on Transport, said:
"The burden for industry would be too high if the lead-time for the introduction of these new requirements is reduced too heavily. Conservatives would like to see business receive a longer period to adapt to legislation before being able to support the report."
