Brussels, 1st December 2008 -- Commenting on remarks made by European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, that the UK is "closer than ever before" to joining the Euro, Timothy Kirkhope MEP, Conservative leader in Brussels, said: "The fact our own government has shown itself unable to manage the economy does not justify it handing over those powers to the EU. "President Barroso says 'people who matter' are manoeuvring to scrap the Pound. Which people? "It is time the government comes clean on the conversations Ministers have had about scrapping the Pound, and who is considering such a move. "I have made it very clear to President Barroso that Britain can be a leading member of the EU without joining the Euro. We need a government that will make the same assertions and back the Pound, rather than putting our currency in jeopardy as the current government has done in recent times. "If the government is planning a U-turn on the Euro, they should come out and say so."
