Backing for plans to simplify vehicle re-registration
Posted,4/4/2012 2:00:00 PM
Conservative MEPs today welcomed plans to make it cheaper and simpler to re-register a motor vehicle from one European Union country in another member state. The proposals from the European Commission would also remove the obligation in many circumstances to re-register vehicles at all, as part of range of measures designed to make it easier to transfer a car, bike or van from one country to another. Citizens who spend part of the year in a holiday residence in another EU country would not have to re-register their car and staff who work in an EU country and use a car registered by their employer there would no longer have to re-register it in their home country, according to the proposals. Car-rental companies could transfer cars to another EU country during the holiday periods without re-registration, which it is hoped will lower the price of car rentals. The measures would also aim to make it impossible to re-register a stolen car in any EU state. Jacqueline Foster MEP, Conservative transport spokesman in the European Parliament, said: "This appears to be a very positive move. It should make things much easier for people who get a job in another EU state and want to take their car with them. It should also simplify things for companies that operate a vehicle fleet across a number of different countries. "At present it can take five weeks to arrange a re-registration and the cost can be nearly £400. That kind of bureaucratic barrier to the free movement of goods, services and workers really should have no place in the Europe of the 21st Century. "The proposals should also put downward pressure on car-hire costs as companies will more easily be able to move their fleets across Europe to meet seasonal demand. "There is a big business in the movement of stolen cars across Europe and if these measures succeed in deterring that criminality, it will be very welcome. "This is what Europe should be doing - introducing better regulation instead of just more regulation.""
