Barroso's war games

 In his "State of the Union" address to the European Parliament today (28 September), Commission President Manuel Barroso focused mainly on the economic and financial crisis engulfing the Eurozone. But he also took the opportunity to call for further defence integration, "if we want to punch above our weight in the world". He also called for a "single defence market and a European defence industry".

Strasbourg, 11th May 2011 -- In the European Parliament in Strasbourg today MEPs debated the EU's defence ambitions with the EU High Representative, Baroness Ashton. She received criticism from euro-federalists for not doing enough and from euro-realists for having unrealistic and inappropriate ambitions.

EU desperately tries to create military role for itself in Libya

Brussels, 13th April 2011 -- The European Union is trying to create a military role for itself in the Libya crisis. At its Council meeting on 12 April, it decided that, if requested by the UN, it will conduct a humanitarian assistance operation, "EUFOR Libya".
