Brussels, 28th August 2009 -- The development coordinator of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament, Nirj Deva MEP, has been praised as a 'true friend' of the Maldives by its President, Mohamed Nasheed.  Mr Deva met with the President in July where they discussed the implementation of developmental projects by the government and the government's efforts to consolidate democracy in the nation.  In a letter to Mr Deva (attached), President Nasheed said:  "I am particularly pleased to note the important and at times the critical role you have played in our struggles to establish democratic governance in the Maldives. You have been a true friend of the Maldives people and never strayed from the firm belief that our efforts would indeed succeed."  Mr Deva said:  "It is a great honour to be described as a friend of the Maldives people.  "President Nasheed should be heralded for the courageous manner in which he has grounded democracy in the Maldives.  "At our meeting we discussed the importance of the EU's assistance to the Maldives so that it can build on the remarkable work of recent years and establish a fully functioning and mature democratic and civil society."
