Sombre news in nurses' drama

Strasbourg, July 11th 2007 -- Libya's Supreme Court has just announced that it is upholding the death sentences on five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor convicted of infecting children with the AIDS virus.

Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, the European Parliament's long-time rapporteur on Bulgaria and a leading campaigner for the release of the medics, commented:

"I am appalled, but not surprised, by the Supreme Court's decision. We must now hope that the medics will be pardoned by President Gaddafi and that this tragic story will quickly be brought to a positive conclusion."
