Strasbourg, 15th December 2010 -- The process of gold-plating European legislation, which became 'a rule rather than an exception under Labour', will be brought to an end thanks to proposals outlined by UK Business Secretary Vince Cable today.

Strasbourg 15 December 2010. The European Parliament today adopted a regulation that will enable a million EU citizens to request a new EU law from the European Commission: the European Citizens' Initiative. European Conservatives and Reformists group spokesman on the committee, Ashley Fox MEP said the move represented a litmus test for the Commission - whether it could take on board and adopt legislation that it doesn't necessarily like.

A leaked report from the European Commission has highlighted the “efficiency of CDS markets in sovereign debt” and praises credit default swaps for keeping national bond yields low. The leaked document even says that CDS has benefited Greece by providing it with added liquidity.

Brazzaville, 6th December 2010 -- This morning Nirj Deva MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament's Development Committee, had the opportunity to speak to the newly-elected Prime Minister of the Ivory Coast, Mr Soro, at his besieged hotel in Abidjan. Mr Deva asked the Prime Minister of the new President Ouattara what he could do to help, to which the Prime Minister said that the lives of the newly-elected government were at risk and further UN forces were needed to guard them from a possible attack from the troops of the former President.
