Support for young farmers

The European Parliament today adopted a report on support measures for young farmers. Although the report does not introduce new legislation, it forms the basis of the Parliament position that the Commission will take note of when it drafts its future report on this issue.
Conservative MEP welcomes Council's agreement on waste package

Conservative MEP Dr Caroline Jackson, European Parliament rapporteur on the Waste Framework Directive, today warmly welcomed the Council's acceptance of amendments put forward by the Parliament. The package was formulated during Monday evening's informal trialogue of the Parliament, Council and Commission, and was subsequently agreed by COREPER today.
EU Grabs Bigger Role in Defence

The European Parliament will vote tomorrow (5 June) on surrendering more power over national defence to the EU. Its report on the Implementation of the European Security Strategy and European Security and Defence Policy calls for a large standing military force under EU command (para 39, para 3)); the rules for use of our armed forces to be written by Brussels (para 6); 'gender mainstreaming' of key operational appointments (para 19); and the European Commission to play an increasing role in procurement of defence equipment (para 43).
