Welcome for European Parliament support for marks of origin

Welcome for European Parliament support for marks of origin

Posted, October 25, 2007 @ 00:00

More than half of all MEPs have signed a Declaration supporting the introduction of marks of origin for certain types of products, including ceramics. The declaration now requires a formal response from the European Commission setting out the action they propose to take.

Malcolm Harbour MEP, Internal Market and Consumer Protection Spokesman for the Conservatives in the European Parliament, has been at the forefront of the campaign to introduce origin marking. As the Chairman of the Parliament's Ceramic Industry Forum, he has been actively involved in the Parliamentary campaign to mobilise support for the Declaration.

He said:

"This is not a protectionist measure. Consumers are entitled to origin information and details of the site of manufacture are also crucial in tracing substandard products that may create health or safety problems. I hope that the UK government will now join other EU governments in adopting this measure, which brings European marking rules in line with the USA."
