Conservative MEPs lead from the front in the battle against global climate change

In a vote today in the European Parliament, Conservatives supported a move to bring aviation within the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), thereby championing David Cameron's EU strategy to concentrate on tackling global climate change.
The ETS, launched in 2005, aims to cap greenhouse gas emissions from energy-intensive industries and allow companies to buy and sell emissions permits with each other.
John Bowis MEP, Conservative Environment Spokesman, said:
"Conservatives in the European Parliament are leading the way in shaping EU policy on climate change. We are implementing David Cameron's 3G agenda on Global Competition, Global Poverty and Global Climate Change."
He added: "Conservatives know that the market will deliver the most cost-effective route to reducing our carbon emissions. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme is the most mature multilateral scheme in existence, and is important as the potential nucleus of a global carbon trading market. However we should not delude ourselves into thinking that it is the silver bullet to the problem of CO2 emissions. Conservatives will continue to push for vital and necessary reforms to the emissions trading system."
